Information Collection and Use
A special note about children: the XFINITY WiFi service is not directed to children under the age of 13, and Comcast does not knowingly collect personally identifiable information from anyone under the age of 18 through the Service unless expressly specified.
Children should always get permission from a parent or legal guardian before sending any information about themselves (such as their names, e-mail addresses, zip code and telephone numbers) over the Internet, to us or to anyone else.
What categories of personally identifiable information do we collect?
The information collected by Comcast falls into two categories: (1) information voluntarily supplied by visitors to and users of the Service; and (2) general usage information recorded as visitors and users navigate the Service. Some of this information is personally identifiable information, but much of it is not. Personally identifiable information is information that identifies a particular person.
To make use of some features of the WiFi Service visitors and users need to register and we ask them to provide certain information as part of the registration process. We may ask, for example, for your name, email address and zip code, and, if you purchase service, your address and payment information. Our systems will remember some of this information the next time you log in and use our website, but you can always review and change your information by following the instructions below under Changes to Information in this statement.
When you submit any personally identifiable information, Comcast: (i) will use the information for the purposes described at the time you submit it; and (ii) we may use your name, zip code and e-mail address to inform you of products and services we offer in your area.
What categories of persons or entities do we share personally identifiable information with?
We consider the personally identifiable information contained in our business records to be confidential. We may sometimes disclose personally identifiable information about you to our affiliates or to others who work for us such as service providers and vendors only to provide you the WiFi Service and as described above. In addition, we may be required by law or legal process to disclose certain personally identifiable information about you to lawyers and parties in connection with litigation and to law enforcement personnel. For example, we may be required by law to disclose personally identifiable information about you without your consent and without notice in order to comply with a valid legal process such as a subpoena, court order, or search warrant.
What information do we collect and how do we use it when you use the XFINITY WiFi Service?
We collect and store certain personal information with the sign on process and devices you use for billing and customer service purposes. Additionally, we may record non personal information about use of the Service for aggregate metrics. We use this information to analyze and improve the XFINITY WiFi Service. It helps us maintain and study our WiFi network to deliver better service to you. On a regular basis, we delete the above usage information from our logs.
Comcast reserves the right to monitor, intercept and disclose any transmissions over or using our facilities, and to provide user information, or use records, and other related information under certain limited circumstances (for example, in response to lawful process, orders, subpoenas, or warrants, or to protect our rights, users or property.
We may record some anonymous information about your usage of this WiFi Service for purposes of improving the efficiency and effectiveness of the Service and to automate your logins on the same device. Besides the location of the access point you log in to and aggregated usage data from that access point, we record only the media access control address (“MAC Address”) associated with the device you use to access the WiFi Service to enable you to log back in during the time you have signed up for access, and we may track the time(s) and location(s) of the access point(s) you use to access the WiFi Service. The MAC Address is a short series of numbers unique to your phone, laptop, tablet or other WiFi-enabled device. It does not contain any of your personally identifiable information. We do not use “cookies” in connection with WiFi Service access. In addition we will collect some basic information necessary to provide the service, such as the MAC address of your device and the location of access points you use.
Where can visitors and users opt in or out of receiving Comcast promotional email or direct mail?
As you sign on to the XFINITY WiFi Service as a non-subscriber to XFINITY Internet or it you are not a Performance Tier or above XFINITY Internet subscriber, we may ask for your email address and home zip code. We will use the e-mail address you provide when you sign in to send you service messages and we may send you promotional messages regarding XFINITY products or services you might be interested in based on the zip code you provide. Any promotional email that we send will include a way to opt out of receiving additional messages. If you sign in to the Service again, you might receive an additional message, which again will provide an opt out link. You may choose to opt out of promotional emails about Comcast’s products and services by going to the Internet web page located at www.comcast.com/preferences and following the instructions there. If you have otherwise provided your email address to Comcast, or Comcast has already obtained it, then Comcast may have already contacted you about receiving promotional emails separately. You may also contact Comcast at 1-800-COMCAST to ask us to put your name on our internal company “do not mail” list so that you do not receive marketing or promotional postal mail from us or made at our request.
We store all information gathered through your use of the WiFi Service within a database accessible only to Comcast and its specifically authorized contractors and vendors. However, as effective as any security measure implemented by Comcast may be, no security system is always completely effective. We cannot guarantee the complete security of our database, nor can we guarantee that information you supply won't be intercepted while being transmitted to us over the Internet.
Whenever you log in, we help protect your privacy and the safety of your login ID and password by providing 128-bit encryption on the sign-in page. This is the same standard used by thousands of online banking and financial services sites around the world to protect your critical transactions. When online with any WiFi service, remember that WiFi is not an inherently secure technology and that wireless communications can be intercepted. Changes to Information
You may review and change personally identifiable information that you provide to us through the Service by returning to the pages where you entered it, and reviewing or changing the information directly. You may also request changes to your payment information if you are a pay per use customer of the WiFi Service, by calling Comcast at 1-866-366-5756, where you will be required to verify your identity.
